Angels: Truth, Protection, and Discernment in Christ

For as long as I can remember, I have believed in angels.
Sacred Scripture affirms their reality, and the Church teaches that God, in His goodness, assigns each of us a guardian angel—created not to serve our desires, but to guide and protect us according to His will. Jesus Himself speaks of this when He says, “See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father” (Matthew 18:10).
Angels are real. They are not symbolic. And they are not demonic by nature.
At the same time, angels are often misunderstood—especially in today’s secular and New Age culture.
What Angels Are—and What They Are Not
Angels are created beings who serve God alone. They do not act independently, nor do they bring messages, comfort, or guidance apart from God’s authority. Their purpose is always ordered toward obedience, humility, and the glory of God.
Scripture tells us that God “commands His angels to guard you in all your ways” (Psalm 91:11). This protection is not about convenience, wish fulfillment, or personal gain. It is about spiritual safeguarding and helping us remain aligned with God’s truth.
The secular world often reshapes angels into something very different—personal guides, helpers, or spiritual companions meant to bring reassurance, success, or answers on demand. In New Age spirituality, angels are sometimes “worked with,” summoned, channeled, or treated as accessible sources of wisdom apart from God.
This is where distortion enters.
Discernment Matters
I share this with care and honesty: I have had spiritual experiences throughout my life that were not demonic. I do not deny God’s protection, nor do I deny the presence of angels. However, the enemy is skilled at mimicking what is good and subtly twisting it—especially when spiritual sensitivity is present without proper grounding in Christ.
When angels are removed from their rightful place under God’s authority, focus shifts from God to experience. From trust to control. From humility to dependence on spiritual sensation.
This shift can be subtle. It often begins with comfort and reassurance—but over time, it can lead to confusion, fear, and spiritual instability.
Scripture reminds us that “Satan disguises himself as an angel of light” (2 Corinthians 11:14). This does not mean angels are evil—it means discernment is essential.
Guardian Angels Lead Us to God, Not Away from Him
True guardian angels do not draw attention to themselves. They do not ask for devotion, communication, or reliance. Their presence leads us quietly toward God—toward prayer, obedience, peace, and trust in Christ.
The Church teaches that from birth until death, our lives are surrounded by angelic care. Yet even this protection does not replace our need for God. Angels serve Him. They do not replace Him.
In my own journey, learning the proper role of angels brought clarity and freedom. It helped me understand how spiritual truth can be misused when removed from Christ, and how God gently restores order when we return to Him.
Walking Forward in Truth
This reflection is not meant to provoke fear, but to bring peace.
Angels are part of God’s design. They are gifts—not tools. Protectors—not guides to be consulted. Servants of God—never intermediaries apart from Christ.
When our faith is rightly ordered, angels point us upward, not inward. They help us walk in truth, not chase experience. And above all, they remind us that God alone is our source, our protector, and our refuge.
If you are coming out of New Age spirituality, or feeling unsettled about past spiritual experiences, know this: God is patient, merciful, and faithful. He restores gently. He brings clarity without shame. And He leads us—step by step—back into peace. I know this firsthand. I have been there. I walked through darkness and, by God’s grace, found the light of Christ.
